As many of you may know, President Obama and the First Family are due in Chile tomorrow morning as part of the US President's tour of Latin America promoting economic partnershps. There is great enthusiasm for our President here in Chile and there is also GREAT security (see photos). Today we (teachers) were re-routed back into the city as we attempted to drive out of Santiago because several highway exits were closed. There are police cars and policemen (and policewomen) every few feet along the road all over the city - In fact, over two thousand of them are on extra duty this weekend.
We are very happy and proud about this Presidential visit and are delighted to be in Chile during a time when there is so much good will toward the USA. Still, on a personal note, I feel a little bit sorry for the Obamas because they will only be in Chile for 20 hours... what a shame! They will not get to see many of the beautiful sights that we have seen and they will not get to experience much the fantastic art, culture, food, dance, etc. that we have been able to enjoy. Que lastima!
