Oh what a glorious day we had today touring the beautiful city of Santiago! After beginning the day with a big hugs and candy from Sr. Angela, the principal of Colegio Santa Ursula, we set off for a full day of discovery and learning.
Our first stop was the Cathedral of Santiago, a majestic church from the Colonial period of Chile. Just as in all cities founded by the Spaniards, the Cathedral is in the heart of the city on the main plaza along with government buildings and shops. We took the time to walk around the inside and, in addition to tourists, found many people praying and making open confessions. We also learned about La Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of Chile, who has a chapel dedicated to her in the Cathedral.
Other highlights of the day included a visit to the National History Museum, the Government palace known as "La Moneda", a cultural center for native artisans and one of the main hills of Santiago, el cerro de Santa Lucia (St. Lucy's hill). The students climed to the top and were treated to fantastic views of the city.
Even though we have only been here a short time, we feel very much at home and are delighting in a multitude of discoveries (such as new sparkling sodas, see photo above). Tomorrow we will spend the day with our friends at school - can't wait!!
